The vacations of Italians are changing face: the traditional exodus of August is losing ground, while short trips during weekends and holidays are on the rise. This is what emerges from an analysis by the Italian travel tech company Salabam Solutions, which examined over 500,000 bookings, capturing new travel habits increasingly oriented towards flexibility and the search for the best quality-price ratio.
The most interesting data concerns the duration of stays. Today, Italians are increasingly choosing "smart breaks", short periods of relaxation that last on average 2.7 days, usually concentrated during long weekends or holiday bridges. A trend that tells a new way of experiencing leisure time: instead of concentrating everything in a single summer vacation, many prefer to indulge in more experiences throughout the year, taking advantage of a few free days to recharge their energies.
Planning has also changed. For these short getaways, bookings are made on average 51 days before departure, while for Italian destinations, the phenomenon of last-minute decisions is growing. The situation is different for intercontinental trips, which continue to require planning well in advance.
Despite the desire to explore new destinations, Italians continue to choose their own country above all. According to the analysis conducted by the Emilia-based company, over 62% of bookings concern Italian locations, while France (6%) and Spain (5%) follow at a distance among the most requested foreign destinations.
Even in choosing accommodation, traditional solutions prevail: almost 73% of travelers prefer hotels, while bed & breakfasts and apartments maintain more modest shares. If the desire to travel does not change, the way of organizing the trip does. Attention to costs is leading more and more people to consider smart solutions that allow them to save without giving up the experience.
Among these is the phenomenon of satellite destinations: locations near major tourist centers that offer more affordable prices for hotels and services, while still ensuring easy access to main attractions.
In Italy, a classic example is Mestre for visiting Venice, while abroad, the choice to stay around Paris or other major European capitals is growing, thus reducing the overall cost of the vacation.
The “smart” traveler chooses the destination also based on the company. For example, families prefer well-organized destinations, with dedicated services and facilities suitable for children. Groups of friends, on the other hand, look for lively places, rich in events and socialization opportunities, while larger groups or those composed of people with different interests prefer more versatile destinations, from the mountains to theme parks.
Finally, among the most evident trends of recent years, coolcationing is confirmed, that is, the choice to spend summer vacations in locations with cooler climates. Increasingly high temperatures are pushing many travelers towards the Italian mountains or destinations in Northern Europe, where it is possible to experience summer in a more pleasant way and engage in outdoor activities without the scorching heat that, especially in recent weeks, has affected Italy and Europe.
Shorter, more frequent, and organized with attention to budget. The vacations of Italians tell of an increasingly dynamic tourism, where flexibility, economic sustainability, and the search for authentic experiences guide choices. Whether it's a weekend in an art city, a few days at the beach, or a getaway in the mountains, smart breaks seem destined to become one of the main trends in Italian tourism in the coming years.
