On November 11th, the First National Day of Historical Costumes will be celebrated, an initiative dedicated to enhancing traditions, craftsmanship, and local culture, with the aim of promoting quality tourism that is widespread and strongly identifies with the region.
In recent hours, the event was officially presented at the Museum of Civilization in Rome in the presence of Ministers Santanchè and Valditara.
Throughout Italy, initiatives will take place for the occasion, featuring local communities, and starting in 2026, the Ministry of Tourism will allocate 550,000 euros annually to support them. And it is precisely for the local populations that this celebration was created.
By enhancing these traditional products, "every small village will be able to foster that experiential tourism that visitors are seeking today," explained the Minister of Tourism, Daniela Santanchè. "We must tell the stories of these parts of Italy. The historical costume should not be seen as a mere museum artifact, but as a living and dynamic identity code that connects our ancient artisanal traditions with the prospects of the international market. And in a world where everything is virtual, our five senses are also encapsulated in clothing. In a world where everything is becoming increasingly virtual, from artificial intelligence algorithms to social media, historical costumes represent our identity, our heritage, our craftsmanship. It is important to know where we are going, but also to remember where we come from. And historical costumes are the testimony of who we are."
The Minister of Education, Giuseppe Valditara, recalled that "in Italy there are 60 high schools with 80,000 students involved in fashion, and many of them are dedicated to the restoration and replication of historical costumes. To do this, creativity is needed, as well as an industry that can work perfectly, but also passion and a sense of community, belonging, and awareness of one's identity. A day like this serves to reconstruct and learn about our past, to bring it to the attention of the people, of those who come to visit Italy. No community can have a great future if it is not aware of its past, if it does not have solid roots."
The National Day of Historical Costumes thus aims to be an opportunity to discover the heritage of villages and inland areas, promote local craftsmanship, and celebrate a symbol of identity, belonging, and Italian creativity.
