From Romagna to Brazil, the Piadina obtains IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) status: an international achievement that enhances Italian agri-food excellence.
A historic recognition for the symbol of Romagna in the world after the National Institute of Industrial Property of Brazil officially registered the Romagna Piadina as Protected Geographical Indication (IGP). From today, the iconic Romagna bread can be marketed in Brazil only if authentically made in Romagna, thus putting an end to imitations and guaranteeing consumers across the ocean the quality of the original product.
The registration, which took place on September 30, concerns the provinces of Rimini, Forlì-Cesena, Ravenna and part of the territory of Bologna, extending to Brazil the same protection already recognized at the European level. A milestone that follows just a year after the registration of the collective trademark “Romagna Piadina” in Japan, marking a new step forward for the internationalization of Italian agri-food.
This is an exceptional result: the Romagna Piadina is indeed the first foreign IGP ever granted by Brazil. Of the 112 geographical indications recognized in the country, 111 are national products; only the piadina comes from abroad. Among the 41 DOP recognized, however, 10 are foreign — and two, Franciacorta and Prosciutto San Daniele, also bear the signature of Italian taste.
Alfio Biagini, president of the Consortium for the Promotion and Protection of the IGP Romagna Piadina, called it an extraordinary moment.
The Inpi, on its official website, provides a detailed description of the product from its origins to the present day, also highlighting its cultural significance, already celebrated by Giovanni Pascoli who described it as a true "national bread" of Romagna.
The recognition is the result of a teamwork effort that began at the end of 2023, involving the Consortium, the competent ministry, and the industrial property consulting firm Casanti-Migani of Rimini. Moreover, there is a strong presence of Italians in Brazil and a great interest in “Romagna bread”.
All of this reinforces the value of Italian tradition, further delineating the profile of the Romagna piadina, which is not only one of the most appreciated gastronomic products but also a strong identity symbol that brings the flavor of Romagna, the warmth of its people, and its unmistakable art of hospitality to the world.
