An autumn dream, among golden woods, suspended bridges, and villages that seem to have come out of a fairy tale.
Whether you are romantic or not, there is an experience that manages to dig even among the driest hearts, tearing smiles and sweetness. It is the Foliage Train, a scenic journey that takes place on the historic Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway, a railway line that connects Domodossola (Italy) to Locarno (Switzerland). This route, 52 km long, crosses breathtaking landscapes, among woods, bridges, and tunnels, offering a unique spectacle during autumn, when nature is painted in a thousand colors.
Much more than a simple journey: it is an experience that envelops the senses and awakens wonder. Imagine departing from Domodossola, with the rhythmic sound of the train crossing hills and woods that slowly turn red, gold, and orange. You cross suspended bridges and tunnels that seem to guard secrets from a distant time, while the autumn light plays among the leaves, creating a mosaic of colors that changes at every curve.
The Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway, inaugurated in 1923, is a witness to stories of travelers and artists, of valleys painted like canvases with intense colors and the most surprising shades. Along the way, you encounter small villages that seem to have come out of a storybook, with cobblestone streets and houses with scarlet roofs, and each stop is an invitation to get off and be surprised by the magic of the places.
From October 11 to November 16, 2025, the train will cross this natural palette, giving travelers the freedom to admire the most beautiful views, stop, breathe the fresh air, and feel the rustle of leaves underfoot. In recent years, special events have enriched the journey: photographic exhibitions, tastings, and small outdoor concerts. This year, new surprises await travelers, and the promise is to make every window a living picture, every curve an unexpected emotion.
Whether traveling with a camera in hand or simply with an open heart to wonder, the Foliage Train is an invitation to slow down, to savor the beauty that flows slowly like an autumn afternoon. It is a journey that is not measured in kilometers, but in moments of pure poetry, in memories that remain etched like the colors of a sunset over the mountains.
