Rome Fiumicino Airport “Leonardo da Vinci” officially enters the global elite of air traffic: for the first time in its history, the airport has surpassed the barrier of 50 million annual passengers, a result that marks a turning point for the entire Italian airport system. A record that comes just in time for the Christmas period, when an additional wave of travelers is expected.
The flow of passengers shows no signs of slowing down. Between December 22 and January 7, another 2 million travelers are expected, in addition to the 180,000 anticipated at Ciampino airport. Thus, 2025 is set to close with over 51 million transits, representing an increase of over 4% compared to the previous year.
This expansion is supported by an ever-growing network:
240 connected destinations,
over 30 new routes inaugurated in 2025,
80 countries reached,
100 airlines operating, including six new carriers that have chosen to start their operations in Rome this year.
To celebrate the milestone, ADR has launched a dedicated campaign on airport screens and a celebratory reel on social media, a symbolic thank you to the millions of passengers who have passed through Fiumicino over the year.
The record is not a coincidence. Marco Troncone, CEO of Aeroporti di Roma, emphasized that surpassing 50 million represents “the result of a long-term industrial strategy, targeted investments, and the daily commitment of thousands of professionals.”
Fiumicino thus confirms itself as a central infrastructure for the country's competitiveness, a hub capable of supporting Italy's global connectivity and attracting tourism and investments.
The milestone also becomes an accelerator for the Sustainable Development Plan of ADR, a project worth over 9 billion euros aimed at ensuring capacity, resilience, and sustainability for the decades to come.
Long-haul continues to be the main engine of growth:
North America: 4.7 million passengers, with summer peaks of 40 flights a day and a 20% increase in winter traffic compared to 2024.
Asia: +16% in movements, driven by strong demand towards Korea, Japan, and Bangladesh, and the return of the connection with Hong Kong.
Short and medium-haul: expanding thanks to the development plans of carriers like Wizz Air and easyJet.
On the strategic front, Lufthansa's entry into ITA Airways promises to further strengthen Fiumicino's role as a reference hub for Southern Europe.
Thus, 2025 has also consecrated Fiumicino in terms of quality:
best airport in Europe for the eighth consecutive year according to ACI World,
Airport of the Year at the International Airport Summit in Berlin.
Acknowledgments that confirm the transformation of Leonardo da Vinci into an essential platform for international mobility and for the economic development of the country.
